I'm planning to found a social network web site. In this respect I will be hiring (a) programmer(s). I'm wondering if anyone could tell me how complicated a task this will be. There will be no need for third party apps or direct user manipulation of pages. Any tips or links would be appreciated.

Yeah, sounds easy, but it's very complicated.
There a bunch of sites out there that have cookie cutter networks that you can buy/license.
well, just having generated user pages with links to other user pages is dead simple - any programmer worth his salt should be able to do this in a week or so. but i guess your site should give users to do "something" and that something could get complicated, depending on your wishes.
