Employers check social network sites.?

'Would you really want a potential employer seeing you sitting frazzled on a beach in your swimwear with pina colada down your chin, or stage diving at a death metal concert without a care in the world? It all seemed like a very good idea at the time no doubt but it might not make the best first impression. Savvy employers are already using these sites to look up....'

Why do people think they're so important that they deem themselves worthy of a Bebo/Facebook/MySpace page?

Every waking thought is written down as if people are interested in what they have to say. 99.99% of these people are dull and vacuous with nothing of any import to say.

If some loser wants to show us how popular he is by posting his drunken holiday photos online, then he really is not worth employing.

Set your profile so that only people who have your permission can view it :)
I can't imagine why people would want anyone - let alone potential employers - to see them this way. The internet is a public place - would you put these pictures up in the town centre ?
That's not a question is it.

Yes, we know that employers do that. I've had to do it for employees and googled/facebooked competitors employees!!

Weird though hey.
I'm not sure that employers do actually check social networking sites. I'm an in-house recruiter for a large, multinational company, and I can honestly tell you that I've never looked up a potential employee on a social networking site.

Also, I think your comment is a bit outdated. When Facebook suddenly rose in popularity over a year ago, this point was reported in all the papers so job seekers became aware that if they were looking for a job, they should either set their profiles so that only their friends could view it, or they should remove this kind of stuff until they'd actually found a job.

However, if I was to look up a potential new employee and see photos of the type you describe, I'm not sure that it would bother me anyway. The positive aspect is that it shows that the person has a life outside of work and is not a workaholic. Plus, all of these things were done in their free time and are not work-related - it's not like they were skiving off work to attend a concert.
